What is Depression?
Depression is a serious mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or loss of interest in life. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it is not just about feeling “down” for a few days, it is a medical condition that can deeply affect how you think, feel, and behave. Depression can interfere with almost every aspect of daily living: work, studies, family responsibilities, relationships, and even one’s spiritual well-being.
For some, depression feels like being trapped under a heavy weight, making simple tasks getting out of bed, cooking a meal, or even smiling feel exhausting. For others, it feels like emptiness, numbness, or disconnection from the world around them.
Depression is more than just “feeling down” and it is not a weakness. You cannot simply “snap out of it.” Most people with depression improve with proper treatment whether through medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. Many people blame themselves, thinking they should be stronger, but depression is not about willpower. It is a legitimate health condition that requires support and treatment, just like diabetes or heart disease.

Symptoms of Depression
Depression can occur once in a lifetime, but many people experience multiple episodes. During an episode, symptoms usually occur most of the day, nearly every day, and may include:
- Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
- Irritability or anger over small matters
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies, work, or family life
- Sleep disturbances, insomnia or oversleeping
- Fatigue and low energy
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Restlessness or slowed movements and speech
- Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or self-blame
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts
- Physical symptoms without clear cause (such as headaches or back pain)
For many people, symptoms are severe enough to interfere with daily functioning at work, school, or in personal relationships.
Depression in Children and Teens
Signs in younger people may look different:
- Children: sadness, irritability, clinginess, excessive worry, physical complaints, refusal to attend school, underweight.
- Teens: sadness, frustration, poor school performance, low self-worth, feeling misunderstood, substance use, changes in eating or sleeping, self-harm, withdrawal from friends and activities.
Depression in Older Adults
Depression is not a normal part of aging. In older adults, it may be harder to recognize. Symptoms include:
- Memory problems or personality changes
- Aches and pains without medical cause
- Fatigue, appetite loss, or sleep problems
- Social withdrawal or loss of interest in activities
- Suicidal thoughts, especially in older men
When to See a professional
If you feel depressed, make an appointment with a doctor or mental health professional as soon as possible. If you are reluctant, talk to a trusted friend, family member, or spiritual leader.
